7 Weeks of Academic and Enrichment Fun

Week 1 of our Summer Enrichment Program! We kicked it off with motorcycles! Our speaker, Kentrell Minton from the Almeta Crayton program, showed us the ins and outs of motorcycle riding. Hopefully in the future they will know too how to ride in style.

Week 2 of our Summer Enrichment Program! This week our kids learned how to make healthy snacks without using a microwave or a stove. Thanks to Hyvee Nutritionist on West Broadway, Sandy Thierry, who taught them how to make “ranch dip” with sour cream for carrots and pita pocket sandwiches! The kids certainly loved it. Put away the chips this summer! Carrots, peanut butter sandwiches, and turkey pita sandwhiches will do the tasty job!

Week 3 of our Summer Enrichment Program! This week the kids were able to move, jump, and laugh with foursquare, double Dutch, and independent jump roping. Who remembers playing those games at recess? We rotated 3 groups based on grade level for each activity. One group played a good game of four square outside and another group stayed inside for jump rope and to answer survey questions. They had a blast! They are eating nutritiously and getting exercise.

Week 4 of our Summer Enrichment Program! This week our kids went on a field trip to the University of Missouri Science and Agriculture building. Thanks to science grad student, Michael Moore, for the wonderful experience of allowing the students to look at fossils and furs. The looks on their faces of fascination and awe all while listening and learning is amazing to see. Thank you, Mr. Moore! Science rules!

Week 5 of our science packed enrichment Tuesday and academic support Thursday! On Tuesday middle school science teacher, Christina Moore conducted a science experiment with the students. This science experiment involved gravel, rocks, and pure water to see if rock and water can separate after mixed. With the help of a filter, beakers, and their beautiful minds the rocks and water separated! The beaker of water was then heated to show the salt that was created after the mixture. They all loved it!

Week 6 of our again science packed enrichment Tuesday and academic support Thursday! On Tuesday, the students were supposed to take a trip down to Flat Branch Park to look at fish in the creek. Due to the rain, the field trip was brought to them! Thanks to Mr. Moore for bringing in little fishes from the creek to our students despite Mother Nature. Andrew, one of the students learned a lot about blood worms. “Bloodworms don’t actually suck the blood out of you.”, he said. On a survey, most if not all the students enjoyed the crawfish the most. Some students even got the chance to hold it in their hands! What a great way to learn about the food chain and living creatures outside of land animals.

Last week, week 7 of our summer enrichment and academic support program!! On Tuesday, the program was canceled due to flash flood warnings and heavy rain. But on Thursday, it was a nice sunny and hot day for the kids to spend their last day at the program in the water! Water balloon fights, water limbo, and fun in the sprinklers!! The students had a blast! Before the fun, the students took a survey to talk about their overall experience with the program. Every single one of them enjoyed their time and would love to do it again! What a beautiful and refreshing way to wrap up our 2018 Grade A summer Enrichment and academic support program! We hope to see all of them in the fall geared up and ready for the school year!
