From the Executive
Dr. Threat with Andrew Grabau, Executive Director of Heart of Missouri United Way. A program sponsor for the Grade A Plus Academic Support Program.
GAP has been serving youth and families of Columbia for 20 years now. Like anything else, it started small, just a few kind hearted people and a willingness to give of their time and resources to help youth and their families.
It all began with the vision of Rev. Wesley G. Threat and his wife, Dr. Janice Dawson-Threat in 1999. Rev. Wesley served as the first Executive Director until his passing in 2004, while Dr. Janice served as its Program Director until 2012. "Dr. J" became the Executive Director in 2014.
Through the leadership of "Dr. J" the name of the parent company was changed in 2017 to become Grade A Plus Incorporated. She has worked strategically to establish GAP as a viable and on-going part of the community that provides Academic Support and Enrichment services through a community based program of support.
Financial investment by the Heart of Missouri United Way began in 2013 and later the City of Columbia-Human Services department began to provide support in 2018.
The GAP strategic commitment for growth and development in the 2019-2020 program year is to increase community involvement through the development of the GAP Leadership Committees. The committees are advisory in nature and supportive in action to assist in the development of services and activities for the youth and their families.
GAP has strategic goals and organization guidelines managed by its Board of Directors. The community committees are to increase inclusion and provide opportunity for discussion through on-going meetings on topics and issues leading to the continued success of GAP. (See the Get Involved Page of this website.)
We hope this structure will enable members of the community to become involved, develop their skills as leaders and program developers and qualify for future leadership opportunities as representatives in GAP, as a community volunteer, or on its Board of Directors, or an advocate for youth and families where needed.
I look forward to meeting you at one of our GAP meetings and I hope by working together we can create a brighter future through our service to the Columbia community.
